There are bands that follow a formula and then there are bands like GAEREA who actively reject it.
In a world where extreme metal can sometimes fall into repetition, GAEREA have carved out something far more immersive. Their identity is not just in the music but in the full experience. The anonymity, the visuals, the atmosphere. It all feeds into something bigger than the sum of its parts.
Speaking with frontman Alpha, it’s clear that this latest chapter is not just another release. It’s a deliberate step forward.
“The worst thing that could happen was becoming a formula band,” he explains. “We could probably do that for 20 years, but we wouldn’t grow. The band wouldn’t grow and eventually people would leave.”
That mindset is exactly what shaped their newest material. Rather than staying in their lane, GAEREA leaned into experimentation. Clean vocals, orchestral layers, seven string guitars and a more dynamic songwriting approach all come into play.
For Alpha, it was never about chasing trends. It was about keeping the band alive creatively.
“We wanted to evolve and learn new things. It makes everything feel fresh again, like we’re releasing our first album.”
Despite the shift, the DNA of GAEREA remains intact. The intensity is still there, just now expanded into something more layered and unpredictable.
Interestingly, some of the album’s standout moments were intentionally held back from the spotlight. Tracks like Cyclone and Stardust weren’t pushed as singles, not because they weren’t strong enough, but because they served a different purpose within the album experience.
“Stardust is a very special song. I would never use it to promote sales. It’s something we wanted people to discover within the record.”
It’s that attention to the full album journey that makes this release hit differently. There’s no filler, no throwaway moments, just a cohesive body of work designed to be experienced from start to finish.
Visually, the band continues to build their world in equally striking ways. While fans have noticed recurring elemental themes across music videos like Submerged and Hellfire, Alpha insists it’s more instinctive than intentional.
“We’re a very visual band. It’s about matching the colours and feeling of the song. If a track feels like water, we bring that into the video. If it feels like fire, we go all in.”
That commitment even extends into physically demanding shoots, including the intense underwater filming for Submerged.
“You basically spend the whole morning trying to drown yourself while they get the shots,” he laughs. “But it was worth it.”
With the new material out in the world, GAEREA are now turning their focus to the stage, and for Australian fans, the wait is almost over.
July 2026 marks the band’s first ever visit down under, something Alpha is clearly excited about.
“We’ve been talking about Australia for a long time. Now we can finally come on our own terms and bring the best show we can.”
Rather than sticking to a fixed setlist, GAEREA are approaching each show individually, tailoring the experience to each city while balancing new material with fan favourites from across their catalogue.
The goal is simple. Deliver a complete GAEREA experience in one powerful set.
“We’re trying to combine 10 years of music into about an hour and a half. That’s the perfect length. Anything longer and you start to lose the moment.”
It’s a philosophy that reflects the band as a whole. No excess, no filler, just impact.
For a band built on mystery and intensity, GAEREA are proving that evolution doesn’t mean losing identity. If anything, it’s making them more compelling than ever.
And this July, Australian audiences will finally get to witness it firsthand.
