Finnish metal icons AMORPHIS are preparing to unleash their highly anticipated new album BORDERLAND on September 26, 2025 via Reigning Phoenix Music. With three decades of genre-defining music behind them, the band continues to push boundaries and evolve without losing their trademark blend of melody, heaviness, and atmosphere.

In this exclusive Metal on Tap interview, Jai sits down with drummer Jan Rechberger to discuss how BORDERLAND came together, the challenges of selecting singles, and what fans can expect from the band’s upcoming live shows.

Building BORDERLAND

Jan explains that the sessions for BORDERLAND felt like “the beginning of a new era” for AMORPHIS. While 2022’s Halo was a more progressive and artistic record, BORDERLAND takes a more melodic, approachable direction while still capturing elements from across the band’s storied career. Tracked at Hansen Studios with producer Jacob Hansen, the album features artwork by Marald Van Haasteren and lyrics once again penned by Pekka Kainulainen.

The drummer reveals that the band recorded over 20 songs, leaving final track selections to the producer and label to ensure the strongest and most cohesive album possible. This approach, he says, has allowed AMORPHIS to maintain high standards and keep their sound fresh even after 30 years.

Live Setlists and Touring Plans

With BORDERLAND’s release imminent, AMORPHIS are already rehearsing for their next run of shows, including support dates with Arch Enemy and headline performances featuring multiple new tracks. Jan confirms that Australia is firmly on the band’s radar, hinting at negotiations for a long-awaited return since their last visit in 2013.

AMORPHIS in 2025

From their death-doom beginnings on The Karelian Isthmus to modern classics like Queen of Time and Halo, AMORPHIS have never stood still creatively. In BORDERLAND, the band fuses melodic death metal, progressive touches, and rich keyboard textures into a record that feels like both a summation of their journey and a bold new chapter.
