Finnish melodic death metal heavyweights Insomnium have officially announced their long-awaited return to Australia in May 2025. It’s been eight years since their last visit, and fans across the country have been eagerly waiting for the chance to witness Insomnium’s emotionally charged and atmospheric sound live once again. The band will be joined on all dates by fellow Finns Omnium Gatherum, making this one of the most exciting melodic death metal tours to hit Australian shores in recent years.
We caught up with bassist and vocalist Niilo Sevänen ahead of the tour, and he shared his excitement about returning: “Australia has always been an amazing place for us. The fans are so welcoming, and the energy at the shows is incredible. We can’t wait to get back there and play live again.”
Touring in support of their latest full-length album, Anno 1696, Insomnium are ready to unleash their darkest and most intense material yet. Inspired by the true horrors of the 17th-century Finnish witch trials and famine, the album takes listeners on a bleak and cinematic journey. “We based the album around a dark historical narrative,” Sevänen explains. “The music had to reflect the harsh and cold nature of the story, which led to a sound that is darker and more aggressive than before, even incorporating some black metal influences.”
With a career spanning over two decades, Insomnium have become a cornerstone of modern melodic death metal, known for their ability to blend brutal heaviness with stunning melancholic melodies. Their 2025 Australian tour promises a carefully curated setlist that touches on fan favourites from across their discography, alongside powerful new material from Anno 1696.
