Melbourne juggernaut Monoliyth are back in business with a ball-tearing new single, Excised Unborn, from their soon-to-be-released full-length album, He Who Kills, their first since 2007.
From the very first note of this song I was captured by its intensity and raw Aussie grit that Monoliyth exude emphatically. With guitars drilling into my skull like they were surgically entrenched into my brain and splendiferously slaughtering drumming, this song had me hooked.
Changes in tempo keep you guessing how this song will differ from beginning to end, and let me tell you, the further you get into Excised Unborn, the more intense the song gets.
Growler/Screamer-in-chief Andrew Parkinson crushes this song like an empty beer can, bellowing the lyrics like a seasoned pro, and let me tell you, this guy has a long tongue and he ain’t afraid to use it. Sporting the Angry Anderson look, he is the perfect front man for Monoliyth, emphasising every word with a passion and ferocity.
Mick and Zakk Barr shred the utter shit out of Excised Unborn. Talk about death metal — these two guys use their guitars as weapons to ensure the listeners’ eardrums explode with emphatic aptitude. I would watch and listen to these guys play all day and will if ever given the chance to do so in person.
The same can be said for the rhythm section of Monoliyth, with Jake Mackin fingerbanging the bass with the exceptionalism of Brandon Michael (of Allegaeon) — trust me, that is a very big compliment. And Tim Wright making the drum kit his bitch, playing with incomparable brilliance that makes Excised Unborn detonate with a blast sure to smash many a mosh pit and get heads banging across this broad country of ours.
Put it all together and you have a band that is ready to explode. Monoliyth have already conquered Europe and are primed to take on the great Aussie landscape with not only the new single but with a brand-new album, almost 20 years in the making.
So, Australia, it’s time to show these Melbourne boys some love — buy the album when it comes out, go see their live shows, subscribe to their YouTube page, and give the single a thumbs up. Whatever it takes to help Monoliyth live up to its name. Do your bit to make the band truly Monoliythic.
He Who Kills will be out soon through Wormhole Death Records.
