In this exclusive interview, Jaimunji from Metal on Tap sits down with the incredible Simone Simons, lead vocalist of symphonic metal giants Epica, to dive deep into their upcoming 9th studio album Aspiral – out April 11th, 2025 via Nuclear Blast Records.
In our chat, Simone dives deep into her growth as a vocalist, how she balances technicality with emotion, and the artistic inspirations behind her ever-evolving style. Her passion for storytelling and vocal dynamics truly shines through as she unpacks how this new record came to life.
But what makes Aspiral such a landmark for Epica is its conceptual and creative ambition. The title draws from a 1965 bronze sculpture by Polish artist Stanisław Szukalski, symbolizing inspiration, renewal, and spiritual growth—all of which define the band’s trajectory in 2025. Just like the sculpture, every track on Aspiral stands alone as a unique piece of art, yet collectively they form a cohesive and powerful whole.
The album was created through an entirely reimagined process. From secluded writing retreats that fostered genuine collaboration, to live-in-the-studio recording sessions that captured the band’s raw energy—Epica set out to destroy old patterns and reimagine their sound from the ground up. The result is a revitalized approach that strips away unnecessary studio tricks in favor of dynamic flow, emotional authenticity, and bold musical storytelling.
Each band member contributed deeply to the creative process, encouraging and challenging one another to aim higher than ever before. The outcome? A record that balances symphonic grandeur with metal intensity in a way only Epica can deliver.
Aspiral is a declaration: of evolution, of power, and of purpose. From explosive openers like “Cross the Divide” to the haunting title track, it’s a rollercoaster of melody and metal, showcasing Simone at her absolute peak and the entire band firing on all cylinders.
Breathe in, breathe out—Epica is back with a groundbreaking album. Aspiral isn’t just the next chapter; it’s a new era.
