There was a time when Slipknot and their die-hard fans, affectionately known as “maggots,” weren’t the undisputed rulers of the metal world. But 25 years ago, a band from Des Moines, Iowa, was preparing to unleash a record that would change everything. Their self-titled debut, released on June 29th, 1999, sparked a revolution, reshaping the face of metal and leaving an indelible mark on youth culture across the globe.
What began as a wild, faceless group of masked demons playing brutal, cathartic music evolved into a genre-defining force. That album, produced by Ross Robinson, was a Molotov cocktail, blending jaw-dropping riffs with chaotic rhythms, leading to a record that was both a critical and commercial success. Jim Root, Slipknot’s guitarist, recalls their humble aspirations: “We just wanted people to hear it. Selling out shows and records was the dream, but none of us could have predicted the journey we’d take.”
Slipknot’s relentless drive, creativity, and bloodlust for live performances have brought them to unimaginable heights. From winning a Grammy for “Before I Forget” to headlining legendary festivals like Download, Rock in Rio, and Wacken, the accolades tell the story. Tens of billions of streams, tens of millions of social media followers, and countless RIAA platinum and gold certifications are just a glimpse of their influence. They even created Knotfest, a traveling festival that has become a global phenomenon since 2012, now boasting a popular media arm that includes a podcast and website.
Slipknot’s journey has solidified their place not only as musical pioneers but as a generational band. Loved by fans young and old, they’ve built a legacy through their unparalleled live shows, deeply personal music, and undeniable connection to their maggot family. As they celebrate their 25th anniversary, the band promises to make the experience more personal, returning to their roots while still doing what they do best—delivering face-melting performances that push the boundaries of metal.
Shawn “Clown” Crahan, founding member, says it best: “We’re still walking uphill—it hasn’t leveled off. But you can believe we’re already thinking about what’s next and after that. Get ready to have your face kicked in. Because we just do what we do, spread that maggot culture—it’s a disease. And you’ve been infected.”
Slipknot’s infection spreads deeper into 2024 and 2025, with more to come as they mark their quarter-century of chaos and dominance. Fans should expect the unexpected because Slipknot has never been content to follow the script.
